Many of us experienced lots of ups and downs in 2020. We heard of layoffs at Airbnb, Uber, TripActions, etc. while our family’s health and safety were in doubt. Heck, some of us actually got laid off. Then in late 2020, everything changed for me. I got passed over for a promotion. And to add insult to injury, I wasn’t told about my teammates’ promotions. Over half of the team got promoted while I was left with a 0% raise. I cried from feeling worthless and rejected. But after a week, I told myself the hell with the politics. No one should ever take professional defeats laying down since it’s at-will employment. So, I decided to do something about it.
With rumors of an impending layoff, I started on my exit plan. After months of slogging through interviews, I landed a job offer. But that wasn’t the end of the story. I bought Financial Samurai’s How To Negotiate A Severance, thinking I’d learn how to get paid while quitting my old job. Then it dawned on me, why quit my job at all? That’s when the idea for an Overemployed community was born.
I decided to stay on at my old job while starting my new job, overlapping two jobs as a hedge against uncertainty during the pandemic. I told myself I’d only do it until the end of the month, but as time went on I began to wonder – why not stick around for a few more months and get my deferred compensation? Maybe I will get laid off with a severance! The wild possibilities kept coming.
A big layoff did happen at my old job, but my number didn’t get called. Incredibly, I’ve managed to keep to a 40-hour workweek while working two full-time jobs at once. I decided to keep both full-time jobs until my next RSUs (restricted stock units) vested and then negotiate a severance before having to return to the office. This wait-and-see strategy has netted me over $300K of additional income so far – income I’d have forgone had I simply quit my job.
Overemployed is built to help you accomplish this same feat, repeatedly, whenever the layoff Grinch shows up. But more than anything else, I wanted to organize a community to give the man, aka Corporate America, the middle finger for always trying to screw the little people over.
